Brad Kayton became a serious angel investor in 2010 and since then has met with hundreds of start-up companies, performed due diligence on many dozens of firms, and of course has invested in firms across the country. Brad is a partner and member in The Investors Collaborative, a member of the Launchpad Venture Group (the largest and most active angel group in New England), a member of FP Angels, and active on a number of the crowd financing portals. Brad has uniquely positioned himself to get access to the best start-up companies raising capital. Brad is a serial entrepreneur turned parallel, where he now splits his time among his portfolio investments or other high-tech start-ups as an advisor, Board member, and/or time-sliced executive. Brad has started five companies operationally, and in 2012 enjoyed two good exits from start-ups he had previously co-founded: 2Wire which exited for a total fof $600M (last and major exit value was $475M in 2010) and 4Home which sold to Motorola (and then soon after Google) for an undisclosed amount but which amounted to a more than 100% IRR for investors.
Brad adds the most value in the early years of a company’s life cycle, and regularly can be seen in the start-up community providing pro bono web3 venture studiomentoring through various venues. Brad has been a CEO four times, a board member often, came up through the ranks operationally on the product manager-marketing side, and began his career as a software programmer & engineer so understands technology intimately. Brad has experience or expertise in Web 2.0, consumer software/hardware, enterprise software, telecom/broadband, energy management, and medical devices/equipment.
Brad’s thesis of investing in a start-up companies as an asset class is best illustrated in the feature article (lead story) in the premiere issue of The Start-up Monthly:
Brad spent most of the 1990s working in Austin, then lived and worked in Silicon Valley for 11 years until a few years ago when he was recruited to be the CEO of robotics firm in the Boston metro area, and is now in his current “parallel” mode. Brad has an MBA and a Masters in Communications Technology from the University of web 3 venture studio Texas at Austin, and a BA from the University of Virginia where he was an Echols Scholar. Brad is married with two children and lives in Hollis, NH with an office on Main Street in Nashua, NH (home to his angel fund and advisory firm, Studio Ventures). In his off time, Brad enjoys ancient history including collecting artifacts, fine art, Napa/Sonoma & Bordeaux red wines, sports & recreation, and tinkering with tech gadgets.
